20190831 Ampthill Jets vs Shelford

Match Report

In front of a decent crowd including the Ampthill Mayor plus Club President and Chairman, the Jets had a great pre-season battle against a talented Shelford team.

The Jets started off at a pace and were initially dominant in the scrum and line out with a catch and drive game keeping them on the front foot. Two quick tries by flanker and man of the match, Josh Burton (both converted by full back Will Norford) led to a 14 – 0 lead for the Jets.

Any thought of a one-sided match was soon dismissed as Shelford came back positively, creating space down the blindside leading to a try for one of their forward pack who showed a good turn of pace. Ampthill bagged the next score though with a try by inspirational new captain Eric Edwins, a simple pick and go with Shelford not defending the ruck. Sharpshooter Norford inexplicably missing a simple conversion. Shelford though had the final say of the half with a score by their No 2.

Half time 19-12 to the Jets, but turning around to play up the slope the Jets knew they were in a game and started to introduce their 10 replacement players from the bench. The second half was pretty nip and tuck, great defence by the Jets saw a Shelford attack held up over the line. Particularly pleasing was the committed defence by Jorell Hill in his first-ever game of rugby!

The only score of the second half came from another debutante, Bartek Krzyzanski who found himself on the wing and produced a good finish.

Overall a good, competitive run out. Thanks go to Paul Allen and his Shelford lads. It was good to see several of our sponsors watching and we appreciate their support. Thanks also to Jets physio Anna who provided much-needed support to both teams.

Today saw Jets back-rower Jack Wilkinson joined on the pitch by his Dad, how many other clubs fielded a father/son combo today? This is what makes Ampthill Rugby Club so special.

Serious stuff next Saturday with the Jets due to host London Irish amateurs, 3pm kick off. All support welcome.

Match Report

A bright, dry day saw the Jets eventually get a home league fixture and it was 1st v 3rd in this Herts and Middlesex Merit League one match. With both the Academy lads and our mates from the Extras also at home Dillingham Park had a great atmosphere and not much space! Academy prefer to play outside the clubhouse in the mud so the Jets had the privilege of running out on pitch 3.

Something strange is happening with the Jets this season, Wednesday night training is rocking with great attendance levels. This in turn gives coach Jonny a selection headache each week and today was no different with some quality players not in the 18 man squad.

Game started and it was 8 minutes in when after initially tripping himself up near the line Will Norford got back into the line and scored the first try which he converted. Connor Barry then somehow murdered a 2 man overlap but was rescued by brother Ben scoring, again safe boots Norford converting.

Then a scrum to Jets and a back row move called which Beasley forgot to execute but luckily Norford went over for the try which he duly converted.

Spavs then turned over the ball near our own line and Bill carried long and hard. Jets got a penalty which Beasley took quick and soon Norford was over for a first half hat trick and yet another conversion

Farmer boy Tomkins then started to carry and bump players off. From one such run Conor Barry went over for a try and again Norford added the 2.

From the kick off Bill caught the ball, carried and passed to George, 10 seconds later Bill has the ball back and scored the try. Norford MISSED the kick!

Jets weren't finished and the pack took a scrum against the head and 8th man Beasley carried over. Norford was successful with the extra points so at half time 47 nil to the Jets.

Not much to say about the second half, a few Harpenden injuries leading to uncontested scrums, 2 Jack Saunders tries, one Norford conversion and two Jets yellow cards.
